100 Years of Movies in 100 Days – Day 71 – The Blues Brothers (1980)

Wow, what a busy day. I barely had time to fit today’s movie into my schedule. Today was probably the closest I’ve come to missing a movie, but somehow, someway, I managed to squeeze in The Blues Brothers to kick off the 1980′s. There’s not much I can really say about this ode to destruction and R&B music, except that it’s one of the better SNL skits-turned-movie. Although, I didn’t laugh. Not once. But then, I don’t really find SNL skits that funny to begin with, unless we’re talking about Eddie Murphy impersonating James Brown. And speaking of James Brown, if church were like it’s depicted in this movie, I’d be there every Sunday! And kudos on the John Lee Hooker cameo. So, to quote Forrest Gump, that’s all I really have to say about that.
One of “The Blues Brothers” enduring legacies is the fact that it introduced so much great music to teenage white boys, to include, “Stand By Your Man”. A lot of that music would have definitely remain undiscovered by that demographic.
True, the music is pretty good throughout. I guess I went into it thinking it was going to be some slapstick-y SNL comedy sketch. While there were certainly attempts at humor throughout, I wasn’t really impressed with what I saw.
